FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about seeing an oral & maxillofacial surgeon in Singapore.
General
What is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon?
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dental specialists, recognised by the Ministry of Health and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, who complete six years of hospital-based surgical training focused on the mouth, jaws, face and neck.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Loo?
A referral from your dentist or doctor is helpful but not required for private consultations. Bring any recent X-rays or scans you have.
Where does Dr. Loo consult?
Dr. Loo consults at Smilefocus (Camden Medical Centre, Orchard), Dental Essence (Tudor Court, Tanglin), Smile Design Dental Practice (Serene Centre, Bukit Timah) and Child Smile (Palais Renaissance, Orchard), and operates at several private and public hospitals in Singapore.
What languages does Dr. Loo speak?
English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay.
Is Dr. Jarod Loo the same person as Dr. Loo Sun Din?
Yes. Dr. Loo Sun Din is also known as Dr. Jarod Loo, and may be listed as Dr. Sun Din Loo or Dr. Loo SunDin in clinic and hospital directories.
Jaw Surgery
Do I need braces before jaw surgery?
Not necessarily. With the surgery-first approach, surgery is done first and orthodontics follows over 12–18 months. With the conventional approach, braces come first. Either way, orthodontic treatment ensures the teeth fit together correctly once the jaws are repositioned. Some carefully selected cases may use a 'surgery-first' approach.
Will jaw surgery change how I look?
Moving the jaws changes the underlying facial skeleton, so the profile and lower face usually change. The aim is a functional bite with a balanced facial appearance; your planned changes can be previewed during 3D planning.
Is jaw surgery covered by insurance or MediSave in Singapore?
Coverage depends on whether the surgery is medically indicated and on your insurer's policy. Medically indicated orthognathic surgery may be claimable; the clinic can advise on documentation for your insurer.
Wisdom Teeth
Is wisdom tooth surgery claimable under MediSave?
In Singapore, surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth is a MOH-listed surgical procedure and is generally MediSave-claimable, subject to prevailing limits. Please confirm with the clinic at your visit.
Can all four wisdom teeth be removed at once?
Often, yes — particularly under IV sedation or general anaesthesia. The decision depends on the complexity of each tooth and your preference.
What is dry socket?
Dry socket is a painful condition where the blood clot in the socket is lost early. It is more common in smokers and after lower wisdom tooth removal, and is treated simply at the clinic.
Dental Implants
How long do dental implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular reviews, implants can last ten to fifteen years. The crown on top may need replacing over time due to wear.
Does implant surgery hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Discomfort afterwards is usually mild and managed with standard painkillers for a few days.
Can MediSave be used for dental implants?
Implant placement is on the MOH table of surgical procedures and part of the cost may be MediSave-claimable, subject to limits. The clinic can advise on your specific case.
TMJ Disorders
Will my jaw clicking get worse?
Clicking without pain or locking is common and often needs no treatment. Pain, locking or reduced opening should be assessed.
Do I need surgery for TMJ pain?
Rarely. The large majority of patients improve with conservative, non-surgical treatment.
Sleep Apnoea
Is MMA a first-line treatment for sleep apnoea?
No. CPAP and oral appliances are usually tried first. MMA is considered for patients with a skeletal cause who cannot use, or do not benefit from, other treatments.
Will MMA change my appearance?
Advancing the jaws usually changes the profile of the lower face. Although the surgery is performed to open up the obstructed airway, there is often an added aesthetic benefit: a stronger-looking jaw and less laxity in the lower face. This is discussed and previewed during 3D planning.
Facial Trauma
How do I know if my jaw is broken?
Signs include pain, swelling, teeth that no longer meet the way they used to, numbness of the lip or chin, and difficulty opening. Seek emergency assessment.
