TMJ (Jaw Joint) Disorders — Assessment and Treatment in Singapore
Diagnosis and management of jaw joint pain, clicking, locking and limited mouth opening.
What Are TMJ Disorders?
The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull just in front of the ears. TMJ disorders cover a range of problems affecting the joints and the chewing muscles.
- Pain in the jaw, face or around the ear
- Clicking or grating noises
- Jaw locking open or closed
- Limited mouth opening
- Headaches linked to clenching or grinding
Diagnosis
Assessment includes a detailed history, examination of the joints and muscles, and imaging where needed — panoramic X-ray, cone-beam CT or MRI of the joint.
Treatment Options
Most TMJ problems respond to conservative care: a soft diet, jaw exercises, anti-inflammatory medication, a custom occlusal splint for clenching or grinding, and Botox injections. When symptoms persist, minimally invasive procedures such as arthrocentesis (joint washout) or injections may help. Open joint surgery is reserved for a small number of specific conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my jaw clicking get worse?
Clicking without pain or locking is common and often needs no treatment. Pain, locking or reduced opening should be assessed.
Do I need surgery for TMJ pain?
Rarely. The large majority of patients improve with conservative, non-surgical treatment.
